BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Background

The National Farmers Platform the Gambia NFPG was established in 1996 following 1994 CILSS Praia conference which recommend to conceptualized the formation of national platforms for its 9 member states. Formation of the platform hinges on creation of apex body farmers and their associations in the Gambia that will support and empower farmers for improved agricultural production and productivity.

 

The platform aimed at constituting a credible and acceptable framework which will genuinely cater for the general interest of farmers  through advocacy and representation in the  decision making processes of government nongovernmental,  local administration , international and donor  agencies interested in  the welfare of farmers.

 

Legally registered in 2001, NFPG affiliates with 150 Farmer and producer organizations and have a membership of 280,000 with women covering 45% and youth 38%.  The District Committees in each region comprises of representatives of farmers and kafoos in the different villages within district .The Regional committees are composed of district farmer Representation in each region and the National Executive committee is composed of regional representatives and co-opted members. 

 

Each Farmers Platform Executive committee (District Regional and National) is composed of the following. President, 1 vice president food Crops , 2 VP Cash Crop, 3 Vice President  Livestock, 4 vice president Fisheries , 5 Vice President Horticulture and Environment , Secretary ,Treasurer and Auditor. National Farmers Platform operates in 36 districts in the five administrative regions in the country.

Mission

Constitute a credible and acceptable Apex farmer body with proper framework that will genuinely cater for the general interest of farmers through advocacy and policy dialogue. The organization shall empower farmers for improved livelihood of smallholder farmers and engender large agricultural production and productivity for food and economic security. This shall be done regardless of sex, religion and political affiliation, ethnicity or social statues.

A well-structured apex farmer organization with the Capacity to facilitate the development of a sustainable specialized farmer groups and organizations that will support farmers to improve agricultural production and productivity.
